If you have never used natural soap before, here are a few important notes for you:

  • Natural soap made with a proper formula is never drying. It can be used for your face and body skin.
  • Natural soap is rich in natural oils and butters, there must always be a certain amount of unsaponified oils (between 10 and 25% depending on the formula¬†and additives) which make natural soap nourishing for your skin.
  • You can use natural soap every day.
  • You can wash your hair with a bar of shampoo soap. It has a special formula for your hair. But you can`t use shampoo soap for your skin, it can be drying. The reason is that hair needs less unsaponified oils in soap.
  • Natural soaps can be used for infants.
  • Natural soap lasts much longer than liquid soap if used properly.
  • Soap bars have to cure for at least 4-6 weeks before you can use them.
  • Soap bars tend to have a lower pH than liquid soap. This is mostly explained by the fact that they cure for a few weeks or even months and the general formula.
  • Our skin has an average pH of 5.5, natural soap has pH of about 8 and higher. You can`t have natural bar soap with pH lower than 7.5, otherwise it is not soap anymore! It is all about chemistry. But it does not mean it can ruin your skin. No way. Everything depends on the right formula and ingredients.
  • Natural bar soap which has a proper formula and has cured for at least a few weeks or months tends to have the lowest possible pH for soap of about 7.5-8.0.
  • Natural soaps must be used with a loofah or sea sponge to prolong their usage.
  • Natural soaps can be stored for years on your shelf.
  • Natural soap has been one of the best unisex gift for many years.
  • The proper formula of natural soap must look more or less like this: sodium olivate (saponified olive oil) – it can be any other oil or butter depending on the recipe, aqua (water) and natural additives such as essential oils, herbs, clays, antioxidants (vitamin E). There is no need for any synthetic additives for extra lather, colour or shelf life! If you see non-natural additives, this soap cannot be considered natural anymore.
  • ALL natural bar soaps contain lye, when it is mixed with water and then with oils, a chemical reaction occurs and takes about two days, the final result of which is natural soap. After that soap must cure for at least 4-6 weeks. There is no lye left in the final product! The reaction between oils, lye and water is SOAP.
  • During a soap making process a natural byproduct substance called glycerine is created. Most commercial soap bars do not contain it. Producers remove it or simply use synthetic surfactants instead of oils. Natural cold process soaps have it.
  • Most commercial soaps, hard and liquid (even if claimed pH balanced), are a combination of surfactants and synthetic ingredients. Natural soaps made at Studio Botanica are made using cold process method, one of the two traditional ones, along with the hot process which used to take a lot of time to create soap.
  • There have been claims about soap without soap. It is not natural and consists mostly of surfactants.
